Online Payment

Electronic Commerce, commonly known as e-Commerce, consists of the buying and selling of products or services over the Internet. An e-commerce website enables online shoppers to purchase goods and services through the website by way of a shopping cart or completing online forms.

A Payment Gateway is plugged in to the website so that transactions may be processed using a secure connection directly to the bank.

Payment Gateways are used for:

  1. Purchasing goods and services
  2. Paying annual membership subscriptions
  3. Registering to attend congresses
  4. Making donations

E2 work with the following payment gateway providers:

A step by step approach to conducting e-commerce through your website.

Step 1 – Approach your bank

Contact your bank's Merchant Services Division - i.e. Standard Bank: (011) 241 1200. Explain that you wish to accept credit card payments via your website. That you wish to become a MAIL ORDER merchant and that you will be using 'Virtual Vendor' to submit your transactions and therefore do not require an Electronic Data Capture (EDC) terminal. The Bank will send a consultant to visit you with the necessary forms to be completed.

The legal issues associated with being a MAIL ORDER/TELEPHONE ORDER (MOTO) and or INTERNET merchant must be discussed with the bank consultant and are not affected by the 'Virtual Vendor' agreement. The bank levies a charge of approximately six percent. This must be negotiated by you with the bank.

Once the bank has approved your application they will give you a Merchant Number.

Step 2 – Select a Payment Gateway Service Provider

Upon receipt of your merchant number you need to select a service provider. E2 recommend VCS. To apply for a VCS account - Click here

On approval of your application VCS will provide you with the Interfacing Instructions are required to setup the online payment gateway. This information is required by E2 so that we can setup the online payment facility on your website.

Once the online payment system is setup on the website a set of tests will be run between E2 and VCS to verify that the system is functional and safe. When the parties are satisfied the system will move from test – to live.

Step 3 – Approval

The bank will inspect the website to ensure that the correct terms and conditions are prominently displayed. On approval you will now be in a position to receive online credit card payments.
